Tired of the same old playlists and hankering to unearth
some new music, but unsure of where to look? Here are a few tips for sourcing some
new tunes, because nobody likes a music rut:
·
Music Streaming Radio
Whether you’re a Spotify
or Apple Music user, take advantage of the apps’ radio feature and browse new
music based on artists and songs you already enjoy. Simply input one of your favorite
artists, genres or songs and rate the subsequent music that is played for you to
customize the station to your liking. In no time you’ll be listening to a
steady stream of your favorite new beats.
·
Radio stations
Before
playing that same, tired Spotify playlist on your car commute to work, unplug and listen
to a few radio stations instead. You’re sure to find some new music there. If you’re in
the Seattle area my favorite Indie station is KEXP.
·
Movies and Television
Don’t
just passively enjoy the great music in that movie you watched last Friday
night, look up the soundtrack and discover some new artists. Films and TV shows
have entire music teams whose sole job is to curate the perfect soundtrack.
·
Friends and Family
I truly believe that everyone has
a music soul mate, someone who understands all your musical idiosyncrasies and
just gets your melodious taste—mine is my sister. You’ll never know who you
align with musically until you ask. So here’s a tip for sourcing new music,
STEAL the playlists of your family and friends and ask them for music recommendations.
You never know what old and good music you’ll discover, a good chunk of my
favorite songs came from listening to my grandfather’s old records. Even if you
and your cousin’s musical taste turns out to be as different as night and day,
learning about someone’s favorite music allows you to know them in a truly unique
way.
Happy Hunting,
